Taj Mahal

which in English means “crown of buildings” is a 17th century mausoleum situated in Agra, India. It was built in 1631 by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his beloved wife- Mumtaz Mahal.  According to some Western historians this Mughal architecture which is a perfect blend of Persian, Islamic and Indian architectural styles is a beauty that has never been surpassed.

The construction of this splendid structure bergan around 1632 and was completed around 1653 and employed thousands of artisans and craftsmen.

In 1983, the Taj Mahal became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and about 100 million people recently voted on the internet for it to become one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’ and they all were delighted when Taj Mahal maintained its position among the New Seven Wonders of World. Built entirely of white marble the Taj seems to glow in the light of the full moon, on a foggy morning, the visitors experience the Taj as if suspended when viewed from across the Jamuna river.Taj Mahal’s central focus is the tomb which is large white marble and stands on a square plinth and consists of a symmetrical building with an iwan (an arch-shaped doorway) topped by a large dome and finial.

The base structure is essentially a large, multi-chambered cube with chamfered corners, forming an unequal octagon that is approximately 55 meters on each of the four long sides.

The marble dome that surmounts the tomb is the most spectacular feature. Its height of around 35 meters is about the same as the length of the base, and is accentuated as it sits on a cylindrical “drum” which is roughly 7 meters high. Because of its shape, the dome is often called an onion dome or amrud (guava dome). The top is decorated with a lotus design, which also serves to accentuate its height. The exterior of Taj Mahal are among finest in Mughal architecture. Decorations were created by applying paint, stone inlays, carvings. Throughout the complex, passages from the Qur’an are used as decorative elements.

The interior is decorated by using precious and semiprecious gemstrones, inner chamber is an octagon with the design allowing for entry from each face.

The garden– The complex is set around 300 meter (980 ft.) square Mughal garden.

The Mughal garden

, a design inspired by Persian gardens, was introduced to India by the first Mughal emperor, Babur. It symbolizes the four flowing rivers of Jannah(Paradise) and reflects the Paradise garden derived from the Persian paridaeza, meaning ‘walled garden’.
This is not all… Taj Mahal is a beauty beyond words, its an abode of true love, which can just be experienced by visiting this wonder.

Taj Mahal attracts between 2 and 4 million visitors annually, including more than 200,000 from overseas.
