Situated 80 Km. north east of trichur and 50 Km south west of Coimbatore, Palakkad is known for its wide spread paddy fields. Palakkad is a beautiful district of Kerala, described as the granary state. Rich in flora and fauna Palakkad is full of mountains, forests, fertile valleys, rivers and mountain streams. Palakkad also named as Palghat and lies on the border of Kerala and Tamilnadu, at the foot of the gigantic Western Ghats.
Legend about Palakkad: There are number of legends associated with the origin of the name of Palakkad. In one of the legends, the word Palakkad is derived from two contradictory words “Pala” which means “barren land”, and “Kadu” which means “Jungle”, so the Palakkad came out which means, “the forests of Pala trees”.

The Silent Valley National Park: Palakkad and home to the rare Lion-Tailed Macaque and tigers as well. Free from even the chirping of cicadas, this it can be easily understood, how the Silent Valley got its name. Vehicular transport is possible only up to Mukkali, nearly 24 km from the park. The rest of the way has to be covered on foot up to the source of Kunthipuzha which flows through the valley before merging into the Bharathapuzha (Nila).

The Palakkad Fort: Situated in the heart of Palakkad, it is one of the best-preserved forts in Kerala. It is said that the Hyder Ali of Mysore had built this granite fort of Palakkad in 1766 AD. But later, in 1790 AD this fort took a new birth under British observation. The fort is now the property of the Archaeological Survey of India.
Nelliyampathy : This fascinating hill country is the delight of trekkers. Nelliyampathy is situated 40 km in south of Nenmara and at a height of 467 to 1572 m above sea level. The best feature of this place is that at least 10 hair pin bends have to be negotiated on the Ghat road that passes through the breathtaking evergreen forests of the Sahya Ranges. And if you want to take a panoramic view of one third part of Palakkad then Seethakundu at Nelliyampathy offers a panoramic view of about one third of Palakkad.
Malampuzha Garden: This beautiful garden is merely 10 km away from Palakkad. Famous as an amazing picnic spot Malampuzha comprises a dam and pleasant landscaped gardens. It is situated on the lower hills of the Western Ghats. Reaching to Nelliyampathy is easy as there are frequent buses to this place from Palakkad.
Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary : The Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rare wild animals. It is spread across 285 sq. Km. area and situated at the 110 kms of distance from Palakkad. For the fun seekers boating/cruising facilities are available at the Parambikulam Reservoir. The Rest Houses of the State Forest Department at Thoonakkadavu, Thellikkal and Anappady which offer good accommodation there. Above all, if you are an adventure and keen nature lover then can hire and book a tree house in the reserve forest area in Thoonakkadavu, which must be done in advance.
