Kerala has over 900 km of interconnected waterways, rivers, lakes and inlets parallel to the Arabian Sea that forms the Kerala backwaters. In the midst of the beautiful landscape there are a number of town & cities which are starting and end points of backwater cruises. Many unique species of aquatic life and animals live in and alongside the backwaters. Palm trees, pandanus shrubs, bushes & other leafy plants grow alongside the backwaters provide a beautiful green surrounding landscape. It offers unique opportunity to the tourists to experience memorable backwater cruise in a traditional houseboat.

The Houseboats is a new addition to the travel and tourism of the state’s backwaters. The houseboat may measuring up to 120 feet in length. These houseboats were once used as a cargo vessels poled by one or two men and used to transport rice, coconut and other commodities. With time the houseboats were replaced by some modern modes of transport, leaving the old houseboats to decay.

In modern times the houseboats have come back from time, now these houseboats are been used as as floating hotels with all modern facilities with total comfort and relaxation one can imagine.

The houseboats that cruise these backwaters are constructed using huge planks of jack wood joined together without the use of any nails.

The Kettuvalloms (houseboats) are now comfortably furnished with an open lounge, rooms with attached bath and a kitchen. Every houseboat is manned by a crew of 3-4 men, a cook, guide and oarsman. Houseboats can be the most relaxing experience for any age, size or type of people.
