A bit about the history: The name Goa come from the Portuguese but precise origin is unclear. In ancient literature Goa was known by many names like Gomanta, Gomanchala etc.

Around 1500, Vasco Da Gama succeeded in reaching India and made heavy profits from the spices that he carried back from India to Portugal. So the Portuguese made more expeditions to India establishing many trade centres at various places around southern India. By the end of the 16th century, Goa had already reached its peak and was referred to as “Golden Goa”. With the expansion of the Portugal rule in Goa, Christianity also received a major impetus in the region.
